School’s Out for Summer!! What we’re reading during this “Summer of AI”

The 2026 Book Report by Bond Capital

As a credit partner with decades of experience in the private debt markets, we at Bond Capital view lower-middle-market operators through a highly specific lens. When we deploy mezzanine finance or structured capital into your company, we aren’t just handing over non-dilutive liquidity because we like the color of your logo. We are investing in your operational judgment and, frankly, trusting our credit committee didn’t miss anything during due diligence.

Author Eric Jorgenson is a seasoned tech operator, investor, and business strategist who spent years deeply studying the frameworks of modern industry titans. Rather than writing traditional biographies, he meticulously curates and synthesizes their core philosophies into highly tactical, first- principles handbooks designed for founders seeking scalable, real-world business leverage.

To help you protect your cash flow (and ensure you can actually make your interest payments to us), this strategic brief synthesizes his two critical anthologies: The Almanack of Naval Ravikant (weighted at 80% to address your high-margin scalability) and The Book of Elon (weighted at 20% to keep you from blowing all your capital expenditure on vanity warehouse upgrades).

The Capital Allocation Matrix: Bits vs. Atoms

When underwriting a borrower, our credit committee looks at how efficiently you leverage assets, rather than how many employees you can brag about having at the local chamber of commerce mixer. The following matrix contrasts how these two philosophies approach scale, helping you figure out where to deploy your next round of financing without setting it on fire:

Feature Naval Ravikant (80% Weight) Elon Musk (20% Weight)
Primary Domain Bits, software, media, and code. Atoms, rockets, electric vehicles, and hardware.
Definition of Leverage Code and media with zero marginal cost of replication. The factory itself: “The machine that builds the machine”.
Human Labor View Avoid it; labor is messy, high-maintenance, and unscalable. Automate it heavily, using giga presses and autonomous robotics.
Cost Reduction Method Building a product once and selling it infinitely. The Idiot Index: Stripping component costs down to raw materials.
The End Goal Individual freedom, high autonomy, and personal wealth. Massive industrial output and solving species-level problems.

Part I: The Naval Ravikant Framework (80% Underwriting Weight)

From a mezzanine lender’s perspective, Naval Ravikant’s philosophy is a masterclass in driving operating leverage. For an owner-operator, the goal is to shift your business model away from expensive, linear human labor because let’s face it, managing people is a non-stop exercise in adult babysitting and toward high-margin, predictable cash flows.

1. Capitalizing Your “Specific Knowledge”

Specific knowledge is the unique expertise within your business that competitors cannot easily copy. If a generic AI tool can replace what you do by next Tuesday, you don’t have specific knowledge.

  • The Action: Stop competing on price for generic services. If you operate an environmental services firm, your specific knowledge isn’t “digging holes.” Perhaps it’s your proprietary process for toxic waste remediation. Focus your capital allocation on scaling that exact niche and leave the commodity work to the guys going bankrupt.
2. Deploying Permissionless Leverage

Traditional mid-market growth relies on borrowing capital (Capital Leverage, our personal favorite) to hire a larger sales team or crew (Labor Leverage). While we are happy to cash your checks, Naval warns that compounding human labor just creates management bottlenecks. We advise our borrowers to lean heavily into Permissionless Leverage:

  • Code: Integrate enterprise-grade software to automate inventory tracking and invoicing. If your team is still using a shared Excel spreadsheet from 2014 to run a multi-million-dollar operation, we need to have a serious talk.
  • Media: Build a digital content engine that establishes your company as the regional industry authority. A single, high-quality technical video series explaining how you manage regulatory compliance can market your business to hundreds of enterprise clients simultaneously, saving you from paying commissions to a salesperson who spends half their day on golf simulators.
3. Productizing the Service

If your business requires a completely bespoke, custom solution for every single client, it is incredibly difficult to scale or underwrite. Turn your service into a standardized, repeatable product with fixed pricing and clear-cut delivery metrics. This makes your cash flow predictable, your margins stable, and your balance sheet look like you know what you’re doing.

Part II: The Elon Musk Framework (20% Underwriting Weight)

While Naval teaches you how to structure your business for maximum margins, Elon Musk’s principles in The Book of Elon dictate how you should manage your physical plant and inventory without driving yourself into insolvency.

1. Mitigating Supply Chain Risk via the Idiot Index

Lower-middle-market companies frequently lose precious margin because they get taken to the cleaners by predatory suppliers. Musk addresses this with a strict metric called the Idiot Index:

Idiot Index Formula: Compare the total cost of a finished component with the cost of the raw materials required to make it.

Idiot Index = Total Cost of the Finished Component / Cost of its Raw Materials

  • The Strategic Application: If your manufacturing business pays $250 for a machined valve component, but the raw copper and steel inside it only cost $10 on the open market, your Idiot Index is a staggering 25x. Apply it to the product, the BOM (Bill of Materials), and to the phantom BOMs.
  • The Advice: A high index means you are heavily subsidizing a supplier’s bloated overhead and vacations. As your private credit partner, this is exactly where we advise deploying mezzanine capital. Use the funding to vertically integrate, bring that manufacturing step in-house, eliminate their markup, and stop being the “idiot” in the index.
2. Optimizing “The Machine That Builds the Machine”;

Musk reminds us that manufacturing a product is significantly harder than drawing a pretty design on a whiteboard. In the middle market, your “factory” is your warehouse layout, your fleet routing logistics, or your centralized kitchen. Treat your entire operational footprint as an engineered product. Constantly eliminate physical bottlenecks, accelerate throughput speed, and sweat your fixed assets instead of letting them sit idle.

The Bond Capital Takeaway

True enterprise value is created at the intersection of these two strategies. Use Naval’s digital framework to build a highly scalable, asset-light brand front-end, while ruthlessly applying Musk’s asset optimization to drive down the physical unit economics of your fulfillment engine. When you optimize both, you create an incredibly resilient business that might actually pay us back on time.
